A $125 pair of dividers

Un compasso da 125 Dollari

Last week I went to the local blacksmith and I could not resist asking him to make me a pair of dividers that are dead ringers for the dividers shown in Leonardo da Vinci's Manuscript H, stored at the Institut de France, Paris.

The dividers are stunning. Their movement is smooth and sufficiently stiff. If they do loosen up with use, that can be retightened by striking the rivet at the top with an anvil with the dividers resting on a flat-face hammer.

Or striking the rivet with a stone with the dividers resting on the side of a ductile iron plane. Do not worry about the plane because the dictile iron is indestructible and unbreakable, but avoid using precious stones.

The dividers costs $125, but worth every penny.
Not only they are able to reproduce the same distance between a point and another point and draw a sector, but believe me, with them you will draw a circle more perfect than Giotto's ones.
But it is not finished here, because, last but not least, with these dividers you can also draw, well open your eyes and your ears, a S. Peter's cross.
Yes Scottish friends, I know you're thinking that this is a S. Andrew cross, but you're wrong andyou were always wrong. Ask him.

Buying this tool at this price is a real steal because it is made entirely by hand, eventual machine tools were not used to speed up the process, but only in order to achieve the highest precision and finish quality.
Well, apart from the machines used to extract hematite and magnetite from the mine. And apart from the machines used to extract iron from ore. Oh, and apart from the machines used for the production of semifinished products. Yes, and apart from the machines used for all transport. Ok, apart all the machines used, it is entirely made by hand.

Anyway, if you are short on cash and you can not afford dividers at this ridiculous price, I think the best solution is to make your own. And here comes a good news, the blacksmith sells these dividers also as a kit for $115 (instruction included) : you'll save $10, you can make them in the length you want and you'll have lots of fun.

The local blacksmith also showed me a prototype of a new furniture hardware he is working on. They are nails, ready to use out of the box, and with the tip prelapped up to 6000 grit.

The estimated price is $15 each. They seem expensive, but once you have honed them on the strop, they will enter the wood like a hot knife in mutton tallow or like a nail into predrilled wood.
If, despite the honing, you will still find difficult to insert them in the wood, I suggest you to wipe their shank with mutton tallow or predrill pilot holes in the wood or, at least, to replace in your project, the wood with predrilled mutton tallow.

Thanks to the particular angle of the taper of the shank, if not stressed, these nails will remain well fixed in the wood for generations, but thanks to the particular angle of the taper of the shank they can be easily extracted with a nail puller.

I know that they seem expansive, and for a one week project you can also use cheaper nails, but if you are going to spend three month building something, sure as heck you do not want to skimp on nails, right?
Or wrong?

O sbagliato?
